Walking by Faith not by Sight

At Christ Church 2025 is a year of renewed Faith. This is the sermon preached at Christ Church Sunday January 16, 2025.

For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV).

Walking by faith is a profound concept. It's a journey that every Christian walks, it’s a path that often feels uncertain and shrouded in mist. But as we'll discover, walking by faith is not about blind leaps in the dark. It's about trusting in an unseen but unwavering hand, a God who promises to be with us every step of the way.
This challenges us to live our lives grounded in trust, not in the fleeting evidence of our senses. It's a call to embrace the unknown, to step out in obedience, even when fear whispers doubts and uncertainty.

Scripture Reading

Romans 1:8-17 NIV [8] First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. [9] God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you [10] in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you. [11] I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— [12] that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. [13] I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. [14] I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. [15] That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. [16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. [17] For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

Introduction

Today, we're going to explore a profound concept – walking by faith. It's a journey that every Christian walks, it’s a path that often feels uncertain. Walking by faith is not about blind leaps in the dark. It's about trusting in an unseen but unwavering hand, a God who promises to be with us every step of the way.

Text

2 Corinthians 5:7 NIV For we live by faith, not by sight.

II Corinthians 5:7 NKJV For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Imagine a blind person, their hand securely clasped in the hand of a trusted guide. They cannot see the path ahead, the obstacles, or the beauty of the surroundings. Yet, they walk with confidence, knowing that their guide will not lead them astray. I have a friend who is blind. I fill out her deposit slips, I read her mail to her, I often take her to the bank, I have even taken her to get her COVID vaccinations.  She trusts me that I am leading her around obstacles, that I am reading her mail exactly as it is, that I am filling out her deposits and withdrawal correctly and that when I give her the balance in her accounts it is really what’s there. This, in essence, is what it means to walk by faith. It's about trusting God, our ultimate guide, even when we cannot fully comprehend His plan or see the destination.

Our text today, 2 Corinthians 5:7, declares, "For we walk by faith, not by sight." This powerful statement challenges us to live our lives grounded in trust, not in the fleeting evidence of our senses. It's a call to embrace the unknown, to step out in obedience, even when fear whispers doubts and uncertainty.

Faith, as defined in Hebrews 11:1, is "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." It's not blind belief, but a confident reliance on God's character and His promises. It's the assurance that even when circumstances seem bleak, God is working all things together for good for those who love Him.

Romans 8:28-30 NIV [28] And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. [29] For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. [30] And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

Throughout Scripture, we see countless examples of individuals who walked by faith. Abraham, called to leave his homeland for an unknown land, obeyed without hesitation.

Genesis 12:1-4 NIV [1] The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. [2] “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. [3] I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” [4] So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.

Moses, facing the daunting task of leading the Israelites out of Egypt, trusted God to part the Red Sea

Exodus 14:15-22 NIV [15] Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. [16] Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. [17] I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. [18] The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.” [19] Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, [20] coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long. [21] Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, [22] and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

David, a young shepherd boy, faced Goliath, not with superior strength or weaponry, but with unwavering faith in the God of Israel.

1 Samuel 17:45-50 NIV [45] David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. [46] This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. [47] All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” [48] As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. [49] Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. [50] So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

And Jesus Himself, our ultimate example, walked in complete submission to the Father's will, even when it meant facing the cross.

Matthew 26:36-39 NIV [36] Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” [37] He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. [38] Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” [39] Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV [1] Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, [2] fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

However, for us today, walking by faith is not without its challenges. Fear, that insidious enemy, that we talked about last week, often tries to grip our hearts, whispering doubts and anxieties.

"What if I make the wrong decision?" "What if my prayers go unanswered?" "What if I fail?" These are the questions that can paralyze us, hindering our ability to trust God.

Distractions also abound. The world, with its allurements and temptations, constantly competes for our attention, pulling us away from the path of faith. Material possessions, fleeting pleasures, and the insatiable desire for approval can easily derail our focus on God.

And let's not forget the discouragement that inevitably arises when we face trials and tribulations. When prayers seem unanswered, when suffering lingers, and when hope feels like a distant memory, it's easy for our faith to weaken. We may even question God's love, His faithfulness, and His promises.

But despite the challenges, walking by faith brings immeasurable rewards. It brings a peace that surpasses all understanding, a peace that only God can provide. When we relinquish control and place our trust in Him, a profound sense of calm washes over us.

Philippians 4:4-7 NIV [4] Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! [5] Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. [6] Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. [7] And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Furthermore, walking by faith fosters spiritual growth. Stepping out in obedience, even when it's uncomfortable, strengthens our reliance on God. It deepens our relationship with Him as we learn to hear His voice and discern His will. James 1:2-4 reminds us that trials test our faith, producing perseverance and maturity.

James 1:2-4 NIV [2] Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, [3] because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. [4] Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

And perhaps most importantly, walking by faith provides a sure hope for the future. 1 Peter 1:3-9 reminds us that our inheritance is eternal, a hope that sustains us through life's darkest moments.

1 Peter 1:3-9 NIV  [3] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [4] and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, [5] who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. [6] In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. [7] These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. [8] Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, [9] for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Where in your life are you being called to walk by faith? Is it in forgiving someone who has deeply hurt you? Is it in obeying God's call to serve others, even when it's inconvenient? Is it in trusting God's provision during a time of financial hardship?

Let me give you an example from my life.  Accsus example.

In conclusion, walking by faith is not always easy. It requires courage, humility, and a willingness to surrender our own will to God's. But the rewards are immeasurable – peace, growth, and a hope that transcends all earthly limitations. Let us, therefore, strive to live our lives grounded in faith, trusting in the God who loves us and who promises to be with us always.

Isaiah 41:10 NIV So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Psalms 23:1-6 NIV [1] The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. [2] He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, [3] he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. [4] Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. [5] You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. [6] Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV [6] Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. [7] Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Let us pray for the courage to step out in faith, to trust God even when we cannot see the path ahead. Let us seek guidance from His Word and the Holy Spirit, and let us cultivate a deeper relationship with Him through prayer and meditation on scripture.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We acknowledge that walking by faith is not always easy, and doubts and fears often creep in.

We pray for the grace to trust in You completely, even when we cannot see the path ahead. Help us to silence the voice of doubt and replace it with Your unwavering promises. Grant us the courage to step out in faith, knowing that You are always with us, guiding and sustaining us every step of the way.

We pray for strength to overcome the obstacles that come our way, and for the wisdom to discern Your will in every situation. May we live lives that reflect our unwavering trust in You, and may our actions be a testimony to the power of faith.

We thank You for Your love, mercy, and the assurance of Your presence. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Fairh as Our Foundation

We have designated this year at Christ Church as "2025 a Year Filled with Faith. This is the manuscript of the sermon preached just a few days after the devastating wildfires in and around Los Angeles.

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. (Matthew 7:24-27 NIV)

The rock that Jesus is referring to is our faith in Him and His Word. When we build our lives on the solid foundation of faith in Jesus Christ, we are able to withstand the storms of life, including this and other disasters natural or manmade. Our faith is not just a feeling or an emotion, but a confident trust in God's goodness, love, and sovereignty.

Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance, the conviction, about what we do not see. It is the conviction that God is real, that He loves us, and that He is working everything out for our good.

True faith is not just intellectual assent but active obedience to God's teachings. Those who hear and obey Jesus' words are like the wise builder, while those who only hear but do not obey are like the foolish builder. Our faith is not just a feeling or an emotion, but a confident trust in God's goodness, love, and sovereignty.

Scripture

Hebrews 11:1-12 NIV [1] Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. [2] This is what the ancients were commended for. [3] By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. [4] By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead. [5] By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. [6] And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to im must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. [7] By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith. [8] By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. [9] By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. [10] For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. [11] And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. [12] And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

Text

Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV) "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

In our text today, Jesus teaches us about the importance of building our lives on a solid foundation. He says, “...everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. "

The rock that Jesus is referring to is our faith in Him and His Word. When we build our lives on the solid foundation of faith in Jesus Christ, we are able to withstand the storms of life, including this and other disasters natural or man-made.

The author of Hebrews defines faith for us in Hebrews 11:1-3.

Hebrews 11:1-3 NIV [1] Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. [2] This is what the ancients were commended for. [3] By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance, the conviction, about what we do not see. It is the conviction that God is real, that He loves us, and that He is working everything out for our good.

Faith isn't blind hope or wishful thinking. It's a confident expectation that God will fulfill His promises. Our assurance comes from knowing God's character and relying on His word.

God is Love:
1 John 4:8: "Whoever does not love has not known God, because God is love."

Romans 8:38-39: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

God is Merciful and extends Grace:
Exodus 34:6 NIV [6] And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,

Psalm 103:8: "The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love."

God is Holy:

Isaiah 6:3 NIV And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

God is Just and Righteous:
Psalm 89:14: "Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you."

Deuteronomy 32:4 NIV [4] He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

God is Powerful and Sovereign:

Psalms 93:1 NIV The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.

Isaiah 40:28 NIV Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

Faith allows us to believe in realities that are not immediately visible. This includes spiritual truths like God's existence, the reality of heaven, the reality of hell, and the power of prayer.

In other words, faith is like having a strong belief in something you can't physically see or prove right now, but you're absolutely sure it's true because of the evidence you have from your own life and the lives of those around you, the lives of those examples we have from scripture and our the trust in the source of our faith who is God.

Faith is not something we generate ourselves. It's not a product of human effort or willpower.   Faith is a supernatural work of God. It's a divine gift that enables us to trust in Him and receive His grace.

Faith is a response to God's revelation. God initiates the process by revealing Himself through His Word and His Spirit.

Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV [8] For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— [9] not by works, so that no one can boast.

In Psalm 46:1-3, we read, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging."

There is fire all around us but we do not have to fear, because God is our foundation even when we lose material things.

Matthew 6:19-21 NIV says [19]  “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. [20] But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. [21] For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Then 1 Timothy 6:6-8 NIV says [6] But godliness with contentment is great gain. [7] For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. [8] But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

Because God is our foundation we can seek eternal treasures rather than fleeting earthly possessions

God is our foundation even when we lose loved ones.

Psalms 34:18-20 NIV

[18] The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. [19] The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all; [20] he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.

God is near to us in our grief, and He saves us from the depths of our sorrow.

Losing everything can be devastating and shake our foundations. Trusting God in those moments can feel impossible. Here are a few thoughts on how to navigate that:

Acknowledge Your Pain: Don't suppress your emotions. Allow yourself to grieve, to feel anger, fear, and despair.

Remember God's Character

He is Love: His love for you is unwavering and unconditional, regardless of your circumstances. (1 John 4:8)

He is Faithful: He is always true to His promises. (Psalm 37:28)

He is Sovereign: He is in control, even when things seem chaotic. (Isaiah 40:28-31)

Focus on What Remains

Even when you've lost material possessions or relationships, you still have:

Your relationship with God: This is your most valuable possession.

Your identity in Christ: You are a child of God, loved and cherished by Him.

The hope of eternity: This world is temporary, but your eternal hope in Christ is secure.

Practice Gratitude: Look for the small blessings in your life, even in the midst of hardship.

Focus on Service: Serving others can help shift your perspective and bring joy and meaning back into your life.

Trusting God doesn't mean that your suffering will magically disappear. It means surrendering your anxieties and fears to Him, knowing that He is with you and will walk through the valley with you.

Remember:

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." - Psalm 23:1

This verse reminds us that even in times of need, God will provide for us and guide us.

Faith is an Anchor;

Just as an anchor keeps a ship steady in a raging sea, faith provides stability and grounding when life throws us curveballs. It offers a sense of purpose and direction, even when everything around us seems to be falling apart.

Faith provides inner strength and resilience. It empowers us to face challenges with courage and hope, knowing that we are not alone and that God is with us.

Fear of the unknown is a natural human response to chaos and destruction. Faith helps us overcome fear by reminding us of God's sovereignty and promises of protection and guidance.

Jesus himself spoke of building on the rock of his teachings (Matthew 7:24-27). This implies that faith provides a solid and unshakeable foundation for our lives.

A life built on faith can endure the toughest trials and tribulations.

Just as a tree needs strong roots to grow and flourish, our faith provides the necessary foundation for personal growth and spiritual development.

When life throws us curveballs, faith offers a refuge – a place of peace and solace where we can find comfort and strength.

In times of trouble, we can turn to God in prayer and experience His presence and peace.

Psalms 27:5 NIV For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

Faith provides hope and meaning in the midst of suffering. It reminds us that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for a brighter future.

Our faith is not meant to be kept to ourselves. We are called to share our faith with others, offering them hope and comfort in their times of need.

Our actions should reflect our faith. We should strive to live lives of love, compassion, and service to others, demonstrating the transforming power of God's love.

In a world filled with darkness and despair, our faith can be a beacon of hope, shining brightly for all to see. Faith is an invaluable gift that provides us with strength, stability, and hope in the face of life's challenges. By holding fast to our faith and living it out in our daily lives, we can be a source of light and encouragement to those around us.

In conclusion, our faith  in God is the foundation that stands firm in the midst of chaos and destruction. It is the rock that we build our lives on, and it is the refuge that we run to in times of trouble. May we hold fast to our faith, may we trust in God's goodness and love, and may we be a source of hope and comfort to those around us.  No matter the circumstances.

"Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your presence in our lives. Be our refuge and strength in this difficult time. Comfort those who mourn, provide for those in need, and give us hope for a brighter future. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."

Choosing Faith Over Fear in 2025

This is the manuscript of the first sermon of 2025 at Christ Church. We have designated this year as "2025 a Year Filled with Faith.

Welcome to 2025, as we step into this new chapter, let's embrace every challenge, every joy, and every moment of uncertainty with a steadfast belief in God’s plan.   Let’s embrace this year, no matter what challenges that are ahead knowing that God’s plans are as it says in

Jeremiah 29:11 NIV  [11] For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Our overarching scripture for this year is

Hebrews 11:6 NIV And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Faith will be our compass, through the unknown, leading us toward the fulfillment of God’s promises for us, His people, His family.

As we embark on this new year, let us choose faith over fear. Let us trust in the promises of God, lean on the strength of His Spirit, and live lives that reflect the love and compassion of Christ. Let us be beacons of hope, spreading warmth and light in a world that often feels shrouded in darkness. In choosing faith over fear, we not only find peace for ourselves, but we also become instruments of God's grace and mercy in the world.

Scripture Reading

Psalms 46:1-11 NIV [1] God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. [2] Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, [3] though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. [4] There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. [5] God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. [6] Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. [7] The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. [8] Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. [9] He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. [10] He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” [11] The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Romans 8:14-17 NIV [14] For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. [15] The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” [16] The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. [17] Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

We stand here today at Christ Church in Los Angeles, CA today January 6, 2025 looking at a year brimming with both promise and peril.  But about 3 in the morning on New Year’s Day in New Orleans, we didn’t see the promise, we saw the peril.  Peril" describes a situation where significant harm is highly likely and often imminent. We saw that the evil that our enemy, the enemy of mankind, Satan, orchestrated a terrorist attack that took the lives of 15 people, including the terrorist, injured more than 35 and impacted the lives of countless friends and families of those directly affected and millions of people here in the United States and around the world.

We live in a time of extraordinary change. Technology is rapidly transforming our lives, global issues require coordinated responses, and many individuals face significant personal challenges, and we face the constant danger of crime and terrorism like that which happened in New Orleans and Las Vegas on New Year’s Day.

In the face of such complexity, it's easy to succumb to fear: fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of the future.

The Apostle Paul, in his second letter to Timothy, gives us our text for today.

2 Timothy 1:7 NIV For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

The NKJV says II Timothy 1:7 NKJV For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

This scripture, our text, offers a profound truth. This truth is our anchor in the storm, our compass in the uncharted waters of this new year. Though we  know that we live in a broken sin filled world where there is hatred, mental illness, and evil. Who saw or could have predicted what happened in New Orleans or Las Vegas on New Year’s Day when thousands were out celebrating.   Who knew?

In the midst of this uncertainty, what anchors us? What guides our steps and sustains our souls?

The answer  lies in a single word: faith.

Our text today reminds us, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

Fear is that insidious whisper that seeks to paralyze us. Fear is not from God. It is a counterfeit, a distortion of reality.  The phrase “fear not” or a derivative of it appears more than 365 times in the bible. The Word of God tells us that the only thing we are to fear is to fear God, and the fear of the Lord is a reverential awe and respect for God's holiness, power, and justice.

Matthew 10:26-31 NIV [26]  “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. [27] What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. [28] Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. [29] Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. [30] And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. [31] So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Faith is all about recognizing God’s sovereignty and living in obedience to His will.

Fear breeds anxiety, worry, doubt. It hinders progress, stifles creativity, and damages the very fabric of our relationships. Fear says, "You are not enough. You cannot handle this. You are alone."

But God, in his infinite grace, and mercy, offers us an alternative and that alternative to fear is faith.

Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."

Faith in God is not blind optimism, but a deep-rooted trust in Him, it is belief in His promises, a certainty of His love.

Isaiah 41:10 NIV So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Faith empowers us to face the unknown with courage, to rise above fear, and to embrace the challenges that lie ahead.

Think of what faced the people of Israel. Fear, doubt, and despair threatened to consume them, when they found themselves trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army.

Let’s read it in

Exodus 14:10-12 NIV [10] As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. [11] They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? [12] Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”

Here’s what Moses said at that very time of uncertainty and fear.

Exodus 14:13-14 NIV [13] Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. [14] The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Then God said to Moses

Exodus 14:15-18 NIV [15] …...“Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. [16] Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. [17] I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. [18] The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

Moses believed God, he had faith in what God said and the people followed which shows that they also had faith in what God said. Then Moses, guided by faith, coupled with their faith, led them through the Red Sea, when God parted the waters, and they witnessed God's miraculous deliverance.

Hebrews 11:29-30 NIV [29] By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.

Pharaoh's army and the Red Sea were two giants that created fear in the people of Israel. We too face our own "giants" today, fear is a giant, fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of judgment. These giants seek to intimidate us, to keep us from reaching our full potential, from living the lives God intends for us. But we are not alone. We have the power of faith within us, the same power that can move mountains.

Here is what it says in

Matthew 17:20 NIV He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

How do we cultivate this faith? How do we nurture it in the midst of uncertainty?

  • We can cultivate and nourish our faith through prayer and meditation: Regular communication with God, seeking His guidance, and finding comfort and peace in His presence, as Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ2 Jesus."

  • We can cultivate and nourish our faith by being part of a strong community: Surrounding ourselves with supportive and encouraging relationships, finding strength and comfort in the fellowship of believers. Share your faith journey with others and find encouragement. Participate in worship and fellowship.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NIV[9] Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: [10] If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV [24] And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, [25] not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

  • We can cultivate and nourish our faith by living a life of purpose: Focusing on serving others, making a positive impact on the world. Finding meaning and fulfillment in acts of love and compassion. Helping others can shift your focus from your own anxieties. Find ways to serve your community and make a positive impact.

Matthew 20:26-28 (NIV): "Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

1 Peter 4:10 (NIV): "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."

Matthew 25:37-40 NIV [37]  “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? [38] When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? [39] When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ [40]  “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

  • We can cultivate and nourish our faith by trusting in God's sovereignty: Acknowledging that God is in control, even when life feels chaotic. Finding peace in the knowledge that His plans for us are always good.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Romans 8:28 (NIV): "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

We can give our cares, our burdens, our uncertainties, our fears to God because as it says in

Psalms 55:22-23 NIV [22] Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. [23] But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.

Here's what the Apostle Peter said.

1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV[6] Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. [7] Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

God told told King Jehoshaphat of Judah when he faced what looked like certain defeat at the hands of  enemies that it wasn’t his battle anyway but the battle God’s.

2 Chronicles 20:15 NIV [15] He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.

When we face challenges and feel overwhelmed, remembering that "the battle is not ours" can give us a  profound sense of peace and allow us to focus on trusting in God's guidance and strength.

All of these things remind us and give us the reassurance that God is in control and that His plans for us are always for our good, bringing peace and comfort even in the midst of chaos.

The Fruits of Faith

When we choose faith over fear, the rewards are immeasurable. We experience a deep sense of peace and tranquility that surpasses all human understanding.

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV [6] Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. [7] And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

We will find the courage to face challenges with resilience and determination, knowing that God is our strength.

Psalms 46:1-3 NIV [1] God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. [2] Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, [3] though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

When we choose faith over fear, we cultivate a hope that anchors our souls, a hope that sustains us through the darkest of nights and empowers us to face each new day with renewed vigor.

Just like God told Joshua before he led the people into the Promised Land of Cannan

Joshua 1:9 NIV Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Finally, and most importantly, we must trust in God's sovereignty. Acknowledge that He is in control, even when life feels chaotic and unpredictable. Remember the words of Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests 1 to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ 2 Jesus.

The fruit of faith, my friends, is undeniable.

Conclusion

As we embark on this new year, let us choose faith over fear. Let us trust in the promises of God, lean on the strength of His Spirit, and live lives that reflect the love and compassion of Christ. Let us be beacons of hope, spreading warmth and light in a world that often feels shrouded in darkness. In choosing faith over fear, we not only find peace for ourselves, but we also become instruments of God's grace and mercy in the world.

Let us pray.

Gracious God, we come before you today, humbled by the challenges that lie ahead in this new year. We acknowledge the uncertainties that surround us, the anxieties that grip our hearts, and the fear that threatens to consume us.

But amidst these fears, Lord, we choose faith. We choose to trust in your unwavering love, in your sovereign hand that guides our paths, and in your promises that bring hope to our weary souls.

Grant us the courage to step into the unknown, guided by your Spirit. Help us to silence the voices of doubt and replace them with the whispers of your truth. Equip us with the strength to overcome obstacles, the resilience to bounce back from setbacks, and the compassion to serve others in need.

May our lives be a testament to your faithfulness, a beacon of hope in a world that often feels shrouded in darkness. We pray for peace that surpasses all understanding, for courage that knows no bounds, and for a hope that anchors our souls.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
